The company that my brother-in-law works for is currently hiring software engineers, preferably locals. A few days ago, a local applicant came in to apply for the said post and was required to take a written test. He looked at the sheets of questionaires before him, and tossing them aside, he said, “This looks like a very long test. I don’t have time for this.” And he left.
In other news, I called up the consulate yesterday to ask what the requirements were to have my driving licence renewed. The lady on the phone told me, quite politely, to bring the original and photocopies of my passport and driver’s licence, a passport-sized photograph, and 100 dirhams. When asked how many days do the process usually take, she replied, quite confidently, “Five working days, Maam.”
You see, I still don’t have a U.A.E. driving licence and if I show the driving institute the non-U.A.E. licence that I do have, I’ll be exempted from 20 classes. That would also mean saving time and 1000 dirhams!
So when Masood and I took a few hours off from work this morning to go to the consulate, the guy at the customer service directed us to the Notarials/Marriage section. After queuing for 20 minutes and watching some woman singing her head off (the TV was on mute and the woman appears to be in extreme pain hitting those high notes), we were told that the driving licence can not be renewed here in the U.A.E. I have to return to the country where this was issued.
On our way home, hot (it’s already 30 C) and upset, I saw an LPG delivery truck for a company named, BOOM Gas Refills. A company named, Rona Air and Sea Freight. Rona, in Urdu, means to cry. And a salon named, AL TABAHI Ladies’ Beauty Parlor. Tabahi, in the Urdu language, means destruction.
Anyhow, the picture that I’m going to share with you in this post is the one I took in Al Qasba, Sharjah. Masood and I had a fabulous time, taking a boat ride around the Sharjah corniche and watching the spectacular view of Sharjah at night aboard the Eye of the Emirates, which I wrote about here.
Have a fabulous week, everyone!
