Sharjah Aquarium

Hubby and I went to see the newly opened Sharjah Aquarium at Al Khan road yesterday. Entrance is free this week, so we grabbed the opportunity. Of course, the place was crowded, but it was worth it. It was a great experience.

The Sharjah Aquarium was inaugurated on June 6, 2008, by His Highness Dr. Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Member of the Supreme Council.

What’s that first sign? Not to drop anything in the tanks? I didn’t use flash. I also resisted the urge to knock on the glass. I didn’t feed my finger to the fish either.

The aquarium, built by locals and British experts, enables visitors to make a journey underwater and discover marine life.

This fish was so fast, I couldn’t capture it on lens.

The main aim of the aquarium is educational as it focuses on the characteristics of marine life in the UAE. The plan is to increase the number of species in the aquarium from 30 to more than 50 in the next few months.

The aquarium is also dedicated to the preservation of marine life and to teach more about reproductive and environmental issues.

The glass bridge. We were actually walking over this glass.

Interactive, touch screen monitors everywhere.

This handmade wooden ship costs AED 140!

The place has a huge parking space, very clean restrooms, elevators, prayer rooms, a restaurant, and a gift shop.

If you’re coming from Dubai, then take the Dubai-Sharjah Road. Soon after passing Al Safeer Mall, take left on the bridgeway, and keep straight. There’s a round about at the end of Al Khan Road. Take left; you’ll be able to see the structure (my first photo) very prominently. That’s the place!

For ticket prices and other info, visit their website here.

Hello Usha. Thank you for visiting my blog.

Yes, they don’t answer their phone. I think they are still busy organizing stuff. As long as their website says it’s free, it’s free. At least, that’s what the guard there says.

The place is closed on Sun, Mon, and Tues – but only during the two-weeks promotional period – I suppose this week is the last of those two weeks.

We went there this Friday, around 5 pm. Do visit the aquarium. It’s definitely worth your time 🙂

  16. Chitra says:

    Hi all.. ,

I had come to know about this acquarium through a collegue of mine. But more so seeing the above blogs & pictures urged me to take my family along with another friend and her family for this lovely trip. Indeed, Sharjah Govt has done a very good job on this front.. All of us enjoyed the visit.. kids especially..

Wanted to mention few things…. the entrances and exits are very narrow n on a summer friday when i had been was too crowded.. the mangement should perhaps take measures to manage huge crowds. There was lots of push and pull.. perhaps a railing n letting people go in line should take care of the situation..Though, the parking area is huge, still comparing the visits of people from sharjah and from other emirates very soon it wld be a chaos.. they should soon think about alternatives for parking area.. even this friday when i visited the parking area was full and we had to park our car at a distant place.

However, the attempt is good..n want end with a positive note..”The acquarium is one of the best thing i have ever seen in Sharjah”..Better late than never..well done Sharjah Govt!!

P.s: The family of 2 adults and 3 kids is 49dhms.

  17. nadia says:

Chitra, thank you for your valuable input. It’s highly appreciated. As you might have noticed, another building is still under construction; more marine animals will be added, and hopefully more parking spaces 🙂

Glad you had a great time with your family.

    thanks again

  33. nadia says:

    Hi Preeti,

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

If you’re visiting with kids, it will take you two hours at most, unless there’s a long queue at the entrance.

If you’re in a rush, one hour is enough. But then, there’s a ton of information that you may want to learn while you’re at the Aquarium. There’s an interactive screen, where you and/or the kids can learn so much.

Hope you have loads of fun!
