Chill Out

June 15, 2008 · 5 Comments

A place to Chill Out in Dubai this summer!

Middle East’s first ice lounge, covering an area of 2,400 sq ft, is located at the Times Square Mall, Dubai.

Once in the lobby, you will be given thermal gear to protect yourselves from the chilly conditions. You will first spent a few minutes in the Buffer Zone to get acclimatised. The temperature in the buffer zone is set at 5 C which gives the body time to adjust to the sharp drop in temperature in the dining area.

The ideal time to spend inside an ice restaurant is 30-40 minutes. Although, you can stay longer, if you can stand the sub arctic temperature – minus 6 C.

The workforce comprises people from cold countries such as Romania and Russia to ensure they can withstand sub-zero conditions. Workers at the restaurant are instructed to step out to normal temperature at regular intervals.

Chill Out is claimed to be the only ice restaurant in the world to serve food round the year. It serves cold cuts, cheese, juices, ice creams and cocktails, or rather mocktails (because it does not contain alcohol).

All the ice work was done by Iceculture Inc in Canada and was shipped to Dubai in temperature-controlled reefer containers.

Famous buildings of Dubai. The diffused lighting constantly changes colors as it filters through clean blocks of ice, filling them with subtle hues of varying patterns.

Sheepskin are placed over the seats for added comfort. Nothing feels wet here because there’s no chance for moisture to develop at – 6 C .

The flooring of the restaurant is made of special anti-skid ceramic tiles.

Ice camel. Special lights called LEDs have been used. They do not emit heat hence do not cause the ice to melt.

These ice-beaded curtains separate the couples’ section from the common lounge.

Cover charge is Dh 60, which includes the thermal gear and a mocktail. Or, you can always peek in from outside – for free :)
